The Erasmus Winter Event is a joint event between the French master "Science des plasmas et de la fusion" and the Erasmus Mundus European Master in "Nuclear Fusion and Engineering physics". It takes place at the French institute CEA Cadarache.
The European Master in Nuclear Fusion
Science and Engineering Physics (FUSION-EP) is a unique programme in the EU by the combination
of engineering sciences and a dedicated study of various disciplines of physics. The /integration
of FUSION-EP is evident from multiple components during the course curriculum, in particular the
joint modules. These include - for the second master year students - a two-week Joint
Experimentation and Analysis Session (EMTRAIC) on the COMPASS Tokamak at the Institute of Plasma
Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IPP) in Prague, Czech Republic, and a two-week Joint
Practicum in February at the
CEA Cadarache in
France.
This year, the event took place from the 15
th to 26
th February. A visit to the ITER site on February 15 was also organized. The event was
attended by 38 students. Roughly half of them were French and a half came from the Erasmus Mundus
European Master. The latter students were those who also participated in EMTRAIC at the COMPASS
tokamak (the winter course EMTRAIC was held in December 2015 at IPP in Prague).
The students were spread over 10 tasks, investigating different fields of Physics encountered
in tokamaks, from material testing to theoretical models. Several tasks consisted in remote
operation of the COMPASS tokamak from France.
The topics were strongly related to the current research programme of the COMPASS tokamak,
such as:
- Thomson Scattering profiles in L-mode plasmas with counter-injection NBI
- Measurement of SOL widths with Langmuir probes placed on the horizontal reciprocating manipulator
- Sawteeth study in L-mode plasmas with counter-injection NBI
- Alfven Eigen Mode study with decreasing Bt
Education of young researchers is one of the most important elements of the COMPASS operation.
