This year's Science Fair in Letňany is successfully behind us and the exhibition of the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic shone. Not only thanks to our experiments, but also through thousands of curious visitors.
We showed that plasma is not just an abstract concept from textbooks, but a fascinating element
that can be experienced with multiple senses. Visitors could literally touch it. The enthusiasm of
children and adults was the best energy we could take away from Letňany. At the stand, we presented
the best of our four scientific sections.
Thermonuclear fusion: how to harness the energy of the Sun in a tokamak and provide
humanity with a safe and clean source of energy.
Laser plasma: research into extreme states of matter using cutting-edge laser
systems (including our PALS laser).
Plasma chemistry and materials: development and testing of materials that must
survive extreme conditions - for example in fusion reactors or aircraft engines, ecological waste
disposal by plasma gasification, low-temperature plasma - how it interacts with liquids and where
it finds application in medicine, biology and environmental technologies.
TOPTEC: development and production of ultra-precision optics for critical
applications.
As was also stated at the official meeting of exhibitors with the leadership of the Academy
of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the success of the entire event is due to the enormous
commitment of people who can turn complex scientific knowledge into unforgettable experiences. Many
thanks go to the entire team of the Institute of Physics and the Center for Joint Activities of the
Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic for their excellent cooperation and to all visitors for
their inquisitive questions. We are now returning to the laboratories, but we look forward to
seeing you again in Letňany next year.
