The first phase of the civil construction works for the COMPASS-U project has been completed
The adaptations of the Experimental hall will allow installation of the new COMPASS-U tokamak
including its auxiliary equipment, and the ALIMAT-F scientific device focused on research, development and testing of advanced
fusion materials and conventional and innovative concepts of energy exhaust from the so-called
divertor.
Two original floors and the basement in the Experimental hall were demolished. The newly
constructed reinforced basement will support the new tokamak using 64 special anchors. The new
tokamak will be approximately 10 times heavier than the original COMPASS tokamak and will generate
considerably stronger dynamical forces on the basement during its operation. The 150 cm thick
protective walls made of special concrete will fully shield the generated ionizing radiation. In
the underground part of the modified walls, new access channels were prepared for the tokamak power
supply feeders and the outlets of diagnostic systems, including precisely aligned channels allowing
direct observation and measurement of the plasma parameters in shielded rooms. The dismountable
part of the west wall and specifically the demountable ceiling have also been strengthened and will
continue to allow the highly flexible use of the new COMPASS-U tokamak, including all future
modifications and installations that may occur during the expected minimum 30-year lifetime.
In the Assembly hall, which surrounds the Experimental hall, the structures under the new
sliding heavy concrete doors to the Experimental hall were reinforced and the floor supporting the
new power systems was strengthened. The area for the diagnostic and operating systems was also
expanded by installation of the 3rd floor.
